About the Speaker:

Catherine Day is one of the EU’s most distinguished officials. She has been the Secretary-General of the European Commission since 2005. Prior to this appointment, she served as Director-General for the Environment in the Commission from 2002 to 2005. She has also held a range of senior positions in DGs Enlargement and External Relations and served in the cabinets of Commissioners Sir Leon Brittan, Peter Sutherland and Richard Burke.

About the Speech:

Catherine Day gave an insightful and wide ranging address, which focused on three key areas - the emerging economic governance architecture of the Union, the future shape of the EU (specifically the tension between the Community and intergoverrnmental methods of decision making) and the negotiations on the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework (the EU's long-term budget).
