Germany's Court Ruling on Lisbon and the Consequences for European Integration

About the Speech:

The decision of the German Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht) on 30th June 2009 on the compatibility of the Lisbon Treaty with the German Constitution is of real significance to the future of European integration. While the Court upheld the compatibility of the Lisbon Treaty with Germany's Basic Law, it stated that the German Parliament had not been accorded sufficient rights of participation in European lawmaking and treaty amendment procedures. This address by Prof. Christoph Schönberger explained the content and reasoning of the Court before analysing what the consequences of the outcome may mean for the future evolution of the EU.

About the Speaker:

Christoph Schönberger is currently a Professor of Constitutional Law and European Law at the University of Konstanz, Germany. He has been a visiting professor at Universite de Rouen in France, and his studies have focused on the German and European constitutions. He recently published an article titled “Lisbon in Karlsruhe: Maastricht’s Espionages at Sea” addressing the German Federal Constitutional Court’s case on the Lisbon Treaty.
