'The Bottom Billion'

Prof. Paul Collier presents his critcally acclaimed publication on combatting poverty in Africa (event co-organised with Irish Aid)

About the Speech:

Prof. Paul Collier of the Department of Economics and Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies of the University of Oxford presents his critcally acclaimed publication The Bottom Billion (OUP, 2007), described by the Financial Times as "rich in both analysis and recommendations", an opus that will "change the way you look at the tragedy of persistent poverty in a world of plenty". The event itself is co-organised with Irish Aid (www.irishaid.gov.ie).

About the Speaker:

Prof Paul Collier: I research the causes and consequences of civil war; the effects of aid; and the problems of democracy in low-income and natural-resource-rich societies. In addition to the usual academic outputs, my work has had substantial policy impact. In the past year I have been the senior adviser to Blair’s Commission on Africa; have addressed the General Assembly of the UN; given a seminar at 10 Downing St.; and been invited to meet with Condoleezza Rice on her recent UK visit.
