About the speakers:

The IIEA was pleased to welcome a delegation of security experts from the Japanese Research Institute for Peace and Security (RIPS), comprising:

  • Dr. Seiichiro Takagi (group leader), Senior Associate Fellow of the Japan Institute of International Affairs;
     
  • Dr. Narushige Michishita, Associate Professor of Security and International Studies Program of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies;
     
  • Dr. Nobumasa Akiyama, Associate Professor of the Graduate School of Law and the Graduate School of International Public Policy at Hitotsubashi University;
     
  • Dr. Motohiro Tsuchiya, Professor of the Graduate School of Media and Governance and Deputy Director of Global Security Research Institute (G-SEC) at Keio University.

     

About the event:

The roundtable discussion began with two presentations, one by Dr. Takagi on Japan’s response to the rise of China and the other by Dr. Michishita on Japan’s response to North Korea’s nuclear/missile development. During the question and answer session Dr. Akiyama and Dr. Tsuchiya responded to questions on nuclear security after Fukushima and cybersecurity respectively and the group discussed the likely impact of leadership changes in China and North Korea, possibilities for progress on regional defence cooperation, and negotiations towards an EU-Japan Framework Agreement.
