About the Speech:

In his speech, Eldad Beck gave his perspective on recent events across the Arab World, and particularly on Tunisia and Egypt, where he was present on the ground during the uprisings. He spoke of his optimism about the revolutions and the opportunity they afforded to the protestors to stand up for their rights and freedoms and stressed the centrality of respect in the demands of the protestors. He cautioned, however, that democratisation is a long process and fragile even once instituted, and outlined some of the potential risks he saw to democratisation in Egypt and Tunisia.  The events in the Middle East are, in his view, a chance for the West to free itself from its misconception that the Arab world is inimical to democracy. They are also an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the national complexities and internal conflicts of the region, which he stressed are not all dictated by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Finally, Mr. Beck spoke of the current situation as an opportunity for peace, though he cautioned that current calls for Egypt to reopen its peace accord with Israel would be very damaging for the wider peace process. He said that there must be a stated commitment to peace, including all previous peace treaties, from the new democratic forces in the Middle East.
