About the Event:

Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Benelux countries, the UK and Ireland have committed to collaborate on one of the most ambitious renewable energy projects in the world.

The North Seas Countries’ Offshore Grid Initiative (NSCOGI) will make it possible to transmit high volumes of electricity generated from wind and wave energy in the coastal regions of Northern Europe across great distances to centres of demand in the heart of Europe.

This will constitute the first building block of the European Supergrid. The integration of the North and Baltic Seas’ offshore potential is vital to the development of a European internal energy market and to the achievement of European energy and climate change goals.

About the Speakers:

Georg Wilhelm Adamowitsch was appointed by the European Commission as European Coordinator for the Connection of Offshore Wind Power in Northern Europe in September 2007.

In this capacity he contributes to the cross-border dialogue between different stakeholders (Governments, Regulators, Transmission System Operators, Industry) and promotes the European dimension of the grid development.

Sue Harrison is Head of European Energy Markets at the UK Department Energy and Climate Change.

Martin Finucane is Principal Officer of the Renewable and Sustainability Section at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.

Sue Harrison and Martin Finucane are co-chairs of the NSCOGI working group on market and regulatory issues. They will share their insights on the development of the NSCOGI and the reality of regional cooperation in Northern Europe. They will also explore the challenges of creating a European internal energy market through regional market integration.
