About the Speech:

Dr. Haass gave an overview of America’s foreign policy priorities in a changing world. In a wide-ranging address, he provided an assessment of the current state of play in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and the Middle East. He then identified five competing foreign policy priorities advocated in the United States today, and reflected on the concept and prospects for multilateralism.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Richard Haass was appointed President of the Council on Foreign Relations in July 2003. Prior to this, Dr. Haass was Director of Policy Planning for the U.S. Department of State, where he was a principal adviser to Secretary of State, Colin Powell. Dr. Haass also served as U.S. coordinator for policy toward Afghanistan and U.S. envoy to the Northern Ireland peace process. He was Vice President and Director of Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and a lecturer in public policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Haass has received honorary doctorates from Hamilton College, Franklin & Marshall College, Georgetown University, and Oberlin College.
