About the Speech:

In her address, Commissioner Damanaki presented the Commission’s recent proposals for a radical overhaul of fisheries management in Europe and discussed the challenges and opportunities the reforms present for the Irish fishing industry.


About the Speaker:

Maria Damanaki is the European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

A distinguished Greek Socialist Politician, she was a Member of the Greek Parliament from 1977-1993 and from 2000-2009 and served as Chair of the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence prior to her appointment as Commissioner.

The youngest ever MP on her election in 1977, she also holds the distinction of being the first woman to be elected Vice-President of the Greek Parliament and the first woman to lead a Greek political party.
