A pity that Pat Cox did not take the opportunity to reflect on the role that his support for neo-liberal policies of light touch financial regulation and blind belief in the hidden hand of the market had in bringing about the economic and social calamity that the Irish people are now enduring. Similarly, he might have pointed to the role that this same failed ideology is currently playing in driving the uncoordinated and inadequate response of the European Council and Commission to the crisis. However, I guess it's easier to point the finger of blame at others than to shoulder some responsibility oneself. Europe is indeed a key part of how we resolve this crisis in Ireland and across the globe. However, what is required is a change in political direction, not a mere tinkering with clearly inadequate policies. That change in direction, alas, is not going to come from the current political and Commission leadership in Europe. It is this failed leadership that is fanning the flames of populism and xenophobia in Europe. Desmond O'Toole Co-ordinator, PES activists Dublin Party of European Socialists (personal capacity)
