Very good overview of Poland's EU priorities - concise and articulate. I wish Irish ministers could do the same!

European Union: the Polish experience and challenges for the future

About the speech:

2009 is in many respects an important year for Polish membership of the EU. 2009 marks the fall of the Berlin Wall, symbolising the 'reunification' of Europe after years of division; it marks five years since Poland joined the EU; and it has seen the election of the first Pole - Jerzy Buzek - as President of the European Parliament. There still remains, however, a lack of what the late Bronislaw Geremek called a "common memory" in Europe as to the experiences of other Member States. In economic terms, Poland is expected to be the only Member State not to suffer a recession in 2009, despite the financial crisis. Ongoing economic reforms are expected to enable Poland to adopt the euro by the time of the first Polish Presidency of the EU in 2011. This event provides an opportunity to assess five years of Polish membership of the European Union and how the Poland sees the future evolution of the European Union.

About the speaker:

Mikolaj Dowgielewicz is Secretary of the Committee for European Integration, Secretary of State at the Office of the Committee for European Integration and Deputy Chairman of the European Committee of the Council of Ministers of Poland. He previously worked as an advisor to the Polish Parliament (Sejm), the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, former president of the European Parliament, Pat Cox, and Margot Wallström, Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy. Mr. Dowgielewicz represents the Polish Government in proceedings before the European Court of Justice.
