About the Speakers:

Peter Wehrheim was appointed Head of Climate Finance and Deforestation in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action in 2010. An economist by training, he has previously worked as a consultant to the World Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the European Commission. Prior to joining the Commission in 2004, where he initially served in DG Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Wehrheim was Assistant Professor for Food Policy at the University of Kiel.

Ciaran Black is the Group Innovation Director for Coillte. In this role, Ciaran is responsible for developing Coillte’s innovation capability and systems and for commercialising key innovation projects. He is a business graduate of Trinity and UCD and has worked in a range of industries including Telecommunications, Internet and Natural Resources.

About the Speech:

2011 has been designated the International Year of Forests, recognising the critical role the forests play in sustainable development and the fight against climate change, as important carbon sinks and as a source of renewable energy. In his speech, Peter Wehrheim explored the contribution that forestry and agricultural land use can make to European climate change efforts. The Commission is expected to issue a proposal on this sector in June. Ciaran Black outlined the importance of forestry in Ireland’s climate change strategies and discussed Coillte’s innovative idea of using the carbon value of forests to finance new planting and revitalise the Irish forestry sector.
