Perspectives on Fiscal Consolidation in Ireland

About the Speech:

Mr. O’Leary put the challenge posed by Ireland's current fiscal crisis into perspective by reviewing the domestic and international experience of dealing with severe fiscal crisis. He drew conclusions about successful fiscal consolidation and its conditionality with regard to the composition of adjustment and political & institutional factors.

About the Speaker:

Jim O’Leary is a Senior Fellow of the Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting at NUI-Maynooth. He is also a columnist with the Irish Times. He was Chief Economist with Davy Stockbrokers from 1987 to 2001. He served as a member of the Public Service Benchmarking Body from its inception in August 2000 until his resignation from that body in April 2002. He has also served as a director of Aer Lingus, the National Statistics Board, Gresham Hotels plc and AIB Group.
