Hi Eoin, Unfortunately, this private meeting was held off the record so we can't help you in this instance. Keep an eye on our upcoming events section for other talks addressing this theme.

I've just noticed this event - by any chance is there a video of it or some notes of what was presented? Bearing in mind that it was a private meeting of the Economists Group, a video is unlikely, but I would have liked to have been there!

NAMA – The EU Dimension

The keynote speech took place under Chatham House rules and is off the record.

About the Speech:
The establishment of a National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) to take on loans from troubled financial institutions is one of the most important yet controversial acts undertaken by an Irish government in recent years. Pat McArdle discussed the creation of NAMA with reference to its status as an agency which must operate in accordance with EU State Aid rules, in cooperation with the European Central Bank and under the surveillance of an EU-appointed panel of valuation experts.

About the Speaker:

Pat McArdle has worked as a public servant in both the Department of Finance and the European Commission. A former Chief Economist at Ulster Bank Group and at NCB Stockbrokers, he has represented Ireland at the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development, the International Monetary Fund and the European Banking Federation, and was closely involved in the introduction of the euro.

A Qualified Financial Advisor and a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers, McArdle is also a Member of the Foundation for Fiscal Studies and the Financial Regulator’s Consultative Industry Panel.
