About the Speaker:

Etienne de Durand is the Director of the Centre for Security Studies at the French Institute for International Relations (Ifri). He is a leading authority on French and American defence policy and military interventions and has contributed to journals such as Politique étrangère and the Brookings and RUSI journals. He conducts analyses and forecasts on behalf of the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and has monitored both the Afghanistan and Iraq wars on their behalf. A former visiting fellow at Harvard, he currently lectures at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris.

About the Speech:

Etienne de Durand mapped the evolution of French Security and Defence Policy under Nicolas Sarkozy. In particular, he focused on the new era of Franco-British military cooperation announced in November 2010 by Sarkozy and David Cameron. He also considered the ‘Weimar’ proposals by France, Germany and Poland to pursue enhanced defence cooperation under the Lisbon Treaty.
