About the Speech:
In this speech Mr. Sahel addressed policy issues such as privacy and net neutrality from a high level perspective focused on the ICANN’s Domain Name System– which give each website a unique web address. He framed these issues into a narrative about the major challenges and tensions in the world of the Internet. He also highlighted some of the key policy discussions and some of the major milestones in the development of Internet governance, such as the UN review of the World Summit on the Information Society, and the US Government transition of its oversight of the IANA functions administered by ICANN.
About the Speaker:
Jean-Jacques Sahel is Vice President of Stakeholder Engagement for Europe at ICANN. He has been involved in international government and regulatory affairs, both in the private and public sectors, for over 15 years. He joined Skype as Director of Government and Regulator Affairs EMEA in 2008. When Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011, he was appointed as Director of Microsoft’s EMEA Policy and International Organisations. In April 2014, he was appointed by ICANN as Vice President for Europe. Since July 2013, he is also the Vice-President of the European Digital Media (EDIMA) and Chair of Digital Europe’s ‘Cloud Council’. Since 2009 he has been chair of the UK Chapter of the International Institute of Communications.
