About the Speech:

 As leaders from around the world prepare to gather in Chicago on 20-21 May for the first NATO Summit since 2010, they face major questions about the future of the transatlantic security alliance. The summit will focus on three main issues: NATO’s committment to Afghanistan through transition and beyond; ensuring adequate capabilities to deal with the security challenges of the 21st century; and strengthening NATO’s network of partners around the globe.

In his address, Mr. Michel examined the economic, political and security context in which the summit will take place, analysed the changing role of NATO and considered Ireland’s relationship with the Alliance.

About the Speaker:

Leo Michel is Distinguished Research Felow in the Center for Strategic Research, Institute for National Strategic Studies, at the National Defense University in Washington D.C. His research concentrates on transatlantic defense relations. Previously he served in the Office of the Secretary of Defence, the Central Intelligence Agency and in the US Congress.
