About the event:
US group roundtable discussion with former Irish Times Washington Correspondent, Denis Staunton, on Myths and Realities in Irish-US relations.

Mr. Staunton led the group in a discussion of the changing dynamics of Ireland’s relationship with the United States under a new administration and a new narrative.

He noted the unparalleled access of the Irish government and diaspora groups to the White House and Capitol Hill. He discussed the existence of “Irish-America” as a voting block, as a useful social and cultural network, and the different approaches taken by the presidential candidates in the 2008 election to Irish-American communities. Finally, he discussed the concept of giving back to America, following years of American interest and assistance in Ireland and the Irish.

About the speaker:
Mr. Staunton recently returned to Dublin as Foreign Editor of the Irish Times following his posting as Washington correspondent.
