Priorities of the Swedish Presidency of the European Union

About the Speech:

Ms. Åsenius  addressed the issues that will shape the Swedish Presidency such as the management of the continuing financial crisis, strategies for long-term recovery (including a strategy for sustainable growth and full employment), the ratification and implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, strengthening cooperation in justice and home affairs and working towards an international climate agreement in Copenhagen by the end of 2009.

About the Speaker:

Prior to her nomination as State Secretary for European Affairs, Maria Åsenius worked in the European Commission as deputy head of cabinet for Olli Rehn, Commissioner for Enlargement. She was an advisor to Pat Cox during his term as President of the European Parliament, and prior to her political career Ms Åsenius worked as a journalist based in Paris and Brasília. She is the author of the book "Brasilien - den sovande jätten" (Brazil - The Sleeping Giant).
