About this Event

05 Jun 2009

About the speech:

Marc Otte provided an overview of recent developments in the Middle East Peace Process.  He outlined EU policy objectives in the regions and described the role played by the EU in the continued search for a settlement to the conflict.  Other issues for discussion included the EU’s relationship with the International Quartet and the two ESDP operations in the region.

About the speaker:

Marc Otte was appointed EU Special Representative by Javier Solana in 2003. Prior to this appointment he served for many years in the Council Secretariat and enjoyed a distinguished career with the Belgian Foreign Service.  Mr Otte is one of 11 EU Special Representatives who support the work of Javier Solana in troubled regions and countries across the world.  His current mandate runs until 28 February 2010 and is based on the EU's policy objectives for the Middle East peace process. These objectives include a two-state solution with a democratic, viable, peaceful and sovereign Palestinian state living side-by-side with Israel within secure and recognised borders enjoying normal relations with their neighbours.
