Book Launch at the IIEA

About the Speech:

Dr. Richard Corbett MEP, the European Parliament’s Rapporteur on the Lisbon Treaty, will deliver a keynote address on the occasion of the launch of The European Union and its Constitution: From Rome to the Lisbon Treaty by Dr. Laurent Pech.

As the Rapporteur on the Lisbon Treaty and expert on the evolution and role of the European Parliament in decision-making, Dr. Corbett is in a unique position to comment on the content of the treaty and the role the European Parliament played in its formulation. He is Deputy Leader of the Labour MEPs and author of several books on the European Parliament.

Dr. Laurent Pech, Jean Monnet Lecturer in EU Public Law at NUI Galway, argues in his new book published by Clarus Press that the EU is not and will not become a state and that the treatment of the EU as a democratically deficient entity is misguided. He also contends that the EU constitutional framework is neither neo-liberal nor socialist. For more information click here.

About the Speaker:

Richard Corbett was first elected in a by-election on 12 December 1996 as the Labour Member of the European Parliament for Merseyside West Constituency. He was re-elected in 1999 and 2004 for Yorkshire and Humber under the new regional system. He served until 2009.
