About the Speaker:

Kerry Brown is Head of the Asia Programme at Chatham House where he leads the Europe China Research and Advice Network.  Before joining Chatham House, he worked for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1998 to 2005. He is an Associate of the Centre for International Diplomacy at SOAS, the Centre for Chinese Studies at Nottingham University, and of the IDEE centre at the LSE. His publications include  `Struggling Giant: China in the 21st Century’ (2007), `The Rise of the Dragon – Chinese Investment Flows in the Reform Period’  (2008) and `Friends and Enemies: The Past, Present and Future of the Communist Party of China'  (2009).  `Ballot Box China: Village Democracy in the PRC’ will be published in 2011, along with an edited collection, `China 2020’. He is currently working on a political biography of Hu Jintao, and a book about Taiwan.

About the Speech:

Dr. Brown briefed members on the political aspects of China's forthcoming five-year plan and the ascension of the next generation of Communist Party leaders in 2012. China is entering a new Five-Year Plan period from 2011 to 2015; the twelfth such plan which provides a blueprint for China’s economic agenda, and which will be of great importance for China’s development over the next decade.
