Dr Costa reflected on the UNODC report on 'Crime and development in Africa'

About the speech:

Dr Antonio Maria Costa, Under Secretary General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the UN Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, spoke about Crime and Development in Africa and on the complimentarily of the activities of the EU and the UN in the fight against corruption.

About the Speaker:

Dr Costa has held various distinguished positions including: Under-Secretary-General at the OECD, Member of IMF/World Bank Interim Committee, Member of the G-10 Group for the coordination of economic policy, Director-General for Economics and Finance at the EU Commission, and as Secretary-General of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

This event was particularly timely. EU Justice Ministers agreed a Strategy for the External Dimension of the area of Global Freedom, Security and Justice at their meeting on 1-2 December 2005. Among the Strategy’s priority action areas for 2006 were: i) counterterrorism cooperation with Africa, ii) drug cooperation countries on the trafficking route to Europe, and iii) migration work with Africa.
