Buzek's election is extremely important as a signal that the 2004 enlargement is fully embedded in the Union's institutions.

His story is quite remarkable and he seems very able in the role of President. He was right regarding the Nice Treaty too. The EU can not deal as efficiently and as effectively for its own citizens on its basis.

About the speech:

Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, spoke on the Lisbon Treaty and reform of the European Union, including the main items on the agenda for the European Parliament from 2009 until the next elections in 2014.

About the speaker:

On 14 July 2009, former Polish Prime Minister, Jerzy Buzek, was elected President of the European Parliament. Among the first Polish MEPs to be elected to the European Parliament following Poland's accession to the EU in 2004, Jerzy Buzek has been involved in many of the European Parliament's key legislative dossiers. In 2006, he was awarded 'MEP of the Year' by Parliament Magazine for his work in the European Parliament on scientific research and technology. His election as President of the European Parliament is of particular significance, as it marks the first national of an Eastern European Member State to chair an institution of the EU.
