Annual Review of the Year 2011

About this Event: 

On Tuesday 13 December, the IIEA’s Young Professionals’ Network hosted its Annual Christmas Review of the Year. The panel comprised Paul Cunningham, RTÉ Europe Correspondent; Tom Lyons, Senior Business Correspondent, The Sunday Times; and Jamie Smyth, Ireland Correspondent, Financial Times.

At this event, the panel discussed the political and economic developments in Ireland and the EU in 2011. Providing the view from Brussels and Dublin, they reflected on how Ireland’s austerity efforts have been received in Europe; the progress of the Irish government in rebuilding Ireland’s reputation among its EU partners; the impact of austerity on Irish businesses and consumers; the transformation of the Irish banking landscape; and the challenges facing Ireland on the road to recovery.

About the Speakers:

Paul Cunningham was appointed RTÉ Europe Correspondent at the beginning of 2011. Prior to this, he was RTÉ Environment Correspondent for almost ten years, publishingIreland’s Burning – How climate change will affect you in 2008. As a news reporter with RTÉ, his foreign assignments have included Lebanon, Bosnia, Pakistan and Nepal.

Tom Lyons is Senior Business Correspondent with The Sunday Times. Prior to this, he worked for both Newstalk 106-108 and the Irish Independent. He is co-author of The FitzPatrick Tapes (2011) and the recipient of the Business News Journalist of the Year award at the UCD Smurfit School Business Journalist Awards in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Jamie Smyth is Ireland Correspondent with the Financial Times. Jamie has reported extensively on EU affairs as European Correspondent for The Irish Times in Brussels from 2005-2009. Prior to this, he served as Social Affairs Correspondent and Business and Technology Correspondent at the same publication.
