National defence budgets across the EU are under severe pressure as a result of the economic crisis and multinational cooperation is considered vital if an irreversible decline in defence capabilities is to be avoided.  Claude-France Arnould outlined the work of the European Defence Agency in devising innovative approaches to improving European defence capabilities, fostering a European defence industry and equipping Europe to fulfil its security and defence ambitions.

About the Speaker:

Claude-France Arnould was appointed Chief Executive of the European Defence Agency in January 2011. Previously she was Director for Crisis Management and Planning and Director for Defence Issues at the in the Council secretariat of the EU. Ms. Arnould has been a French Minister Plenipotentiary since June 2001.

The IIEA wishes to acknowledge the support it has received from the European Commission throughout 2011.
