Possible implications for the world of Japan’s new government

Karel van Wolferen is a writer and professor who writes on Japanese politics and  economics, and global political-economic developments. Author of the best selling book The Enigma of Japanese Power, he is a prolific author with his books selling over 1 million copies in Japan. He is Emeritus Professor of Comparative Political and Economic Institutions at the University of Amsterdam.

About the Speech:

After the 2009 general election the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) became the ruling party in the House of Representatives, and thereby ended half a century of rule by the Liberal Democratic Party. The new government intends to change the political system itself and wishes to establish Japan as a politically more responsive entity in the world. But its relations with the United States have become a complicating factor, along with bureaucratic resistance. Karel van Wolferen addressed the Institute on the implications for Japan's foreign policy and its economy.
