IEA China Think-In

A roundtable discussion on China was held in the Institute on the 17 July 2007 with European Policy Centre (EPC) director and founder Stanley Crossick. Mr. Crossick was invited on the basis of his extensive knowledge of the role that China has occupied in the international context and its future importance, as we witness the continuing rise of China.

Mr. Crossick predicted that while we may not know exactly in what direction China will go in the future, its progress will be huge. He discussed a number of domestic issues in the Chinese context such as democracy, human rights, transparency, particularly in relation to business and freedom of expression, and the approach that the EU can take with China in relation to these issues.

Mr. Crossick also compared and contrasted the policy approaches of the United States and the European Union towards China. In doing so, he elaborated on the methods through which the EU can formulate a common and united strategy towards China in order to fully benefit from the varied opportunities that exist, for example in the areas of trade and academic ties.
