"A Baseline Assessment of Ireland's Oil Dependence"

About the Speech:

Gerard O'Neill, CEO of Amarach Consulting and Eoin Gahan, Senior Economist, Forfas, addressed the energy group on Wednesday 26 April 2006 on the findings of the report commissioned by Forfas, A Baseline Assessment of Ireland's Oil Dependence (April 2006).

Forfas commissioned Amarach Consulting, in conjunction with US energy expert Dr Robert L. Hirsch to carry out a baseline assessment of Ireland's dependence on oil as a key input into the Irish economy and to outline key policy considerations for Ireland in minimising the impact when the era of plentiful supply of conventional oil reaches an end.

Eoin Gahan gave some introductory remarks on recent work that Forfas has undertaken in energy policy and outlined the background to the report on Ireland's oil dependence. Gerard O'Neill focused on the implications of peak oil for business and commerce in Ireland, discussing the "forced transition" in energy policy that the peak oil scenario implies.
