About this Event

About the Speaker:

Markus Meckel discussed the theme of freedom and unity in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the path to German reunification twenty years ago. He described how reunification came about and also gave an account of his own personal experience and involvement in the events leading up to reunification, a description of the “peaceful revolution”. He explained how he would not have believed it to be possible at the time to live in a unified Germany, and in a democratic society. He felt that what happened twenty years ago was not only a national event for Germany but equally an important event for Central Europe. It was a symbol for the Central European peaceful revolution and the coming together of Europe.

Mr. Meckel also discussed what was seen as a major issue at the time, that of Poland and the need for clear borders. In addition, Mr. Meckel discussed the EU-US relationship on matters relating to security, as he feels that this will be an increasingly important issue in the future. He sees that security is not purely a military issue anymore. He believes there is a need for deeper and stronger cooperation between the EU and US and a more structured relationship on a series of other issues.

About the Speech:

At this event, kindly sponsored by the German Embassy in Dublin, Mr Meckel will deliver an address on the theme of Freedom and Unity in Europe: From German Reunification to Crisis in Europe and join in a discussion on the future of German foreign policy in the European context.
