Great talk. I wish he had talked about how the genocide that was committed in Bosnia while Europe stood by and watched impacted the loss of moral standing in the world that Europe has experienced. The catastrophe that befell Europe during the breakup of the Yugolavia has had a huge impact on Europe which often does not get mentioned.

About the Event: 

Mr. Ahtisaari and Mr. Leonard addressed members on Europe’s future following the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. They discussed the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty’s provisions and examined how the new roles and capabilities introduced by the Treaty will affect Europe’s influence around the world.   


About the Speakers: 

Martti Ahtisaari was elected President of the Republic of Finland in February 1994. Upon leaving office in February 2000, President Ahtisaari founded the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) and is the Chairman of the Board of CMI. Since leaving the office of the President, Mr. Ahtisaari has undertaken various tasks involved in peace mediation and conflict resolution. In 2005 he facilitated the peace process between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement. Between November 2005 and February 2008 Mr. Ahtisaari acted as the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the future status process for Kosovo. Martti Ahtisaari is the laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize 2008. 

Mark Leonard is Executive Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). Previously he was Director of Foreign Policy at the London-based Centre for European Reform and Director of the Foreign Policy Centre. Mark has spent time in Washington as a transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and in Beijing as a visiting scholar of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He writes and broadcasts regularly on international affairs. His work has appeared in publications including The Financial Times, The International Herald Tribune, The Wall Street Journal, Prospect, New Statesman, Foreign Policy and The Washington Quarterly. He is the author of "Why Europe will run the 21st Century" and "What does China think?"
