Pat Nash gives the lie to all the nonsense about militarisation and shows that the pride of reasonable people in Ireland's role in EU peacekeeping is well placed.

About the Speech:

In his presentation he showed the effectiveness of the EU’s multinational and neutral approach to crisis management in Chad and outlined the lead role played by Ireland on this important mission.  In addition, he made the following points;

-EU crisis management operation Chad has increased security for refugees of the confict in Darfur and facilitated the return of Internally Displaced peoples(IDP’s) in Chad.

-EU mission to Chad demonstrates the effectiveness of EU’s multinational, neutral and impartial approach to crisis management.  Chad involved participation of 26 nations including Ireland.

-The EU is uniquely capable of rapid deployment and effecting change within a short time in crisis situations

-EU peacekeeping missions are unique in terms of the levels of accountability and political oversight

-The EU is a vital partner for the UN in international crisis management.  Chad mission was successfully handed over to UN Minurcat in March 2009, the first time a mission has been transferred from the EU to the UN.

-Ireland is an equal partner with the power of veto in the decision making process for missions. 

-Ireland’s contribution to the mission shows the benefits of Partnership for Peace to the professionalism of the Irish Armed Forces

-The European Defence Agency helps the EU to obtain “good interoperable equipment at low cost” necessary for modern crisis management. 
 

About the Speaker:

Lieutenant General Nash, recently retired, has over 40 years experience of service with the Irish Defence Forces both at home and abroad.  He was recently awarded France’s prestigious “Légion d'Honneur” in recognition of his achievement as Operation Commander for the successful EU peacekeeping mission to Chad.  Prior to this, he has had a wide range of overseas experiences primarily with United Nations Forces in Cyprus and the Lebanon, but also as a staff officer with the European Union Monitoring Mission in the Western Balkans in 1996.
