About the Speaker:

Alexander Italianer is Director General for Competition of the European Commission. Prior to his appointment on 18 February 2010, he was Deputy Secretary General in 2006 in charge of the Better Regulation Agenda and Chairman of the Impact Assessment Board. After 10 years in its Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs, he worked successively in the cabinets of President Santer, Commissioner Verheugen, Commissioner Telicka and President Barroso, interrupted by a brief spell, from 2002-2004, as director for International Economic and Financial Affairs. He holds a graduate degree in econometrics and a Ph. D. in economics from the University of Groningen (the Netherlands), and was a research associate at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) before joining the European Commission in 1985.

About the Speech:

The 'Competition Enforcers Series' will be launched by Dr. Alexander Italianer, Director General of DG Competition. This series will consider the impact of and the need for rigorous enforcement of competition policy on a global scale to overcome the current crises and promote growth and innovation. Speakers on the series will include leading practitioners, academics and members of competition authorities from around the world.

Dr. Italianer will provide an overview of the enforcement of competition policy by the European Commission since he commenced his mandate on year ago. Issues for discussion will include action against cartels, supporting the financial sector through state aid as well as highlighting the role played by 'standard setting' in competition policy. The Competition Enforcers Series is hosted in conjunction with the Competition Authority.
