About the Speaker:

Minister Bagis focused on the issue of Turkish accession to the European Union, first noting that every country that has started negotiations with the EU has finished these negotiations. He stated that over the past eight years, Turkey has made progress in every Commission report.

Minister Bagis noted that Turkey had made significant progress on a myriad of issues, by passing the recent constitutional amendment whereby individual and minority rights were strengthened, democratic processes were enhanced, multiple labour unions were permitted and stronger review of the judicial branch was introduced. He outlined the five expectations that he has for Turkish accession negotiations: fair negotiations, liberalisation of visa control, co-operation on the fight against terrorism, fair-dealing on Cyprus and participation in Council Summits.

About the Speech:

Minister Bagis delivered a keynote address on Turkish-EU relations and discuss the status of the ongoing membership negotiations.
