About the Speech:

From ‘smart’ water management to broadband access for schools and businesses, information and communications technologies (ICTs) are playing an increasingly central role in global development. Dr. Hamadoun Touré discussed the work of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ specialised agency for ICTs, in supporting the spread of telecommunications networks and ICT services in the developing world. In the week leading to Africa Day, Dr. Touré’s address focused in particular on the spread of ICTs in Africa.

This is the opening event in the 2013 IIEA/Irish Aid Development Matters series.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Hamadoun Touré was elected Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in January 2007 and was subsequently re-elected for a second four-year term in October 2010. A long-standing champion of ICTs as a driver of social and economic development, Dr. Touré previously served as Director of the ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) from 1998-2006. Prior to joining the ITU, Dr. Touré worked for a number of years in the satellite industry in his native Mali and across Africa.
