About this Event

03 Dec 2010 @ 12:45

Please note that this event has been postponed until further notice due to wheather conditions.

About the Event:

In this presentation, Dr. Gerhard Knies will expand upon the DESERTEC Industrial Initiative, a concept which aims to fuel Europe’s power needs by transporting clean energy from concentrated solar power plants in the North African desert via HVDC transmission lines to Europe.  As 90 per cent of the world’s population live within 3,000 kilometres of a desert, the DESERTEC initiative is an innovative concept which will harness solar power from deserts and bring this energy to centres of consumption while tackling the two global challenges of climate change and energy security.  This address will be extremely relevant given the European Commission’s recent unveiling of a strategy for competitive, sustainable and secure energy which will require a €1 trillion investment in infrastructure, storage and new technologies in the period leading to 2020.  The presentation will also be significant given the launching of the European Commission’s Energy Infrastructure Package on November 17, 2010, which provides a framework for infrastructure development in the EU.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Gerhard Knies is the Founder of DESERTEC, an initiative which aims to harness clean energy from the world’s deserts to provide electricity for the European and Middle Eastern region.  Dr Knies, is a physicist specializing in elementary particle physics.  He has worked for the University of Berkeley, California, DESY and CERN, the European organisation for nuclear research.  Currently retired, Dr. Gerhard Knies is co-founder of the Trans Mediterranean Renewable Energy Cooperation, a network of 50 professionals in renewable energies and sustainability from European, Middle Eastern and North African countries.
