About the Speaker:

Vladimir Drobjnak is the Chief Negotiator on the accession of Croatia to the European Union since his appointment in 2005. He has overseen all aspects of the accession process, including the opening and closing of all 33 chapters of the EU acquis.


About the Event:

On 1st July 2013, Croatia is scheduled to join the European Union to become the 28th member state of the EU in the first enlargement since Bulgarian and Romanian accession in 2007.  It will be the second of six former Yugoslav republics to join the EU, after Slovenia in 2004.  Mr. Drobjnak's speech was on the new role Croatia will play within the European Union, focusing in particular on its role in the Balkan region. The treaty-signing ceremony for Croatian accession is due to be hosted under the auspices of the Polish EU Presidency, in Warsaw on 19 December 2011.
