About the Speaker:

Simeon Djankov is the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Bulgaria.

Prior to his election in July 2009, Mr Djankov was Chief Economist For Finance and Private Sector Affairs at the World Bank from 1995. During this time he participated in various programs of the Bank on privatization, corporate governance and regional reforms in North Africa, East Asia and elsewhere. He was the creator of the World Bank's annual Doing Business Report, the top-selling publication of the World Bank Group, and was the principal author of the Bank's World Development Report 2002.

Simeon Djankov is ranked among the 100 most cited economists in the world. He was an associate editor of the Journal of Comparative Economics from 2004 to 2009 and is a founder of the Ideas42 think tank. He is co-author of The Effect of Corporate Taxes on Investment and Entrepreneurship (pdf).

About the Event:

At this event, Deputy Prime Minister Djankov delivered a keynote address on The Effects of Corporate Tax on Investment and Entrepreneurship in Europe.

Bulgaria has the lowest tax burden of any country in the EU with income tax and corporate tax both set at a flat rate of 10%. Meanwhile, the European Commission has recently issued proposals for the introduction of a common consolidated corporate tax base in the EU. Minister Djankov touched on all these issues as he outlined his vision for investment, entrepeneurship and competitiveness in Europe.
