About the Speaker:

General Håkan Syrén is the military advisor to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton. He chairs the EU Military Committee (EUMC), the highest military body within the Council. The EUMC directs all EU military activities and provides recommendations to the Political and Security Committee on military issues.

About the Speech:

General Syren traced the development of EU Security and Defence Policy since the late 1990s. He gave an update on the ongoing CSDP military operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Gulf of Aden and Uganda and outlined the role of the EU Military Committee. He also gave an assessment of the new security threats facing the EU and the challenges which CSDP must overcome to respond to these.
