About the Speaker:

Viktor Orbán has been Hungarian Prime Minister since 2010. He previously served a term as Prime Minister from 1998-2002. He has been the leader of Hungarian Conservative party, Fidesz (which is a member of the EPP), since 1993 and became the Chairman of Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Union in 2003. As a founder member of the party, he was a delegate in the Opposition Roundtable, which marked the transition from Communism in 1989, and was elected to parliament in the first free elections in 1990.

About the Speech:

As the Hungarian Presidency of the EU draws to a close, Viktor Orbán reflected on what he has called “the most difficult year for European Integration since the downfall of Communism.” The Hungarian Presidency has faced significant challenges, including the Eurozone crisis, migration pressures in the wake of the Arab revolutions, and intervention in Libya. Prime Minister Orbán outlined the important contribution of the Presidency in providing solutions to these challenges.
