The EU in 2006 – A Commission Perspective

About the speech:

The recently appointed Secretary-General of the European Commission, Catherine Day, addressed a large audience at the Institute on Friday 10 February 2006.

Catherine Day structured her presentation around five core topics that she sees as central for the Union over the next 18 months. These are the Constitution, future financing, future enlargement, the Lisbon Agenda and the issue of re-engaging the citizen. Following her initial address, the Secretary-General engaged in a lively discussion with members of the distinguished audience.

A Rapporteur's Report on the event is available below along with a recording of the speech. Please note that these files only cover the inital address as the discussion which followed was under the Institute's "Europe House" rules of confidentiality, as is usual practice at the Institute's high-level events. The recording is in mp3 format and at 7.23Mb will take around 2 minutes to download on a broadband connection and up to 20 mins on a dial-up.

About the Speaker:

Catherine Day is the current Secretary-General of the European Commission. She has been in that position since 2005 during the Barroso Commission, having previously been the Director General for the Environment.
