About the Speaker:

Herman Van Rompuy is the first full time President of the European Council, a position that was created by the 2009 Lisbon Treaty. In this capacity he chairs all meetings of the European Council, which consists of the Heads of State or Government of the EU Member States along with the President of the European Commission.

Prior to his election to this post, President Van Rompuy served as Belgian Prime Minister and has also served his country as Deputy Prime Minister, President of the Chamber of Representatives, Budget Minister and as a Minister of State.

About the Event:

Herman Van Rompuy has been tasked with guiding the work of the European Council at a moment of deep crisis in the European Union. As head of a special task force set up to examine ways to bolster the Eurozone's economic governance, and as chair of a number of pivotal summits of EU and Eurozone leaders, Van Rompuy has played a leading role in the formulation and promotion of the EU's policy response to Europe's financial and sovereign debt crises.

Ahead of a crucial European Council meeting on 23-24 June, Van Rompuy reflected on his experiences and charted a way forward for the European Union.

This event marked the 20th anniversary of the Institute and was kindly sponsored by ESB.
