About the speech:

The EU's Digital Agenda champions the Internet as a means to achieve economic and social progress. In 2012, the Commission will be focusing on the potential of 'Big Data', the increasingly large and complex datasets that permeate the information economy.

Mr Whelan's presentation outlined the Commission's plans in this area and put them in the context of other initiatives – on data protection, cloud computing, network security and the 'internet of things' – that the Commission is undertaking.

About the speaker:

Anthony Whelan has served as Chef de Cabinet for Neelie Kroes both in her current position as Commissioner for the Digital Agenda and in her previous role as Competition Commissioner.
