The Energy Sustainability Challenge:  Fuelling Cooperation between Asia and Europe

About the Speech:

The Institute will host the 6th Asia-Europe Environment Roundtable in Dublin on September 18 and 19 with the aim of promoting greater dialogue and co-operation between Asia and Europe on the issues of environment and sustainable development. Energy demand in developing countries such as China and many other Asian countries is growing rapidly and is expected to account for the bulk of increasing global energy demand over the coming years. The 2007 IEA World Energy Outlook predicts that 45% of an anticipated 50% increase in global energy demand between now and 2030 will be accounted for by India and China alone. This pattern poses great challenges if we are to achieve more sustainable deveolopment into the future.

Each region has attempted in some way to organise a response to the opportunities and challenges of energy sustainability. Great synergy can be obtained if both Asia and Europe engage the challenges and opportunities together.

There will be three main sessions in this roundtable. Approximately 40 high-level participants and speakers representing all 45 ASEM partners from the research/academia, civil society, industries and governments involved in various aspects in the field of sustainable energy policies will discuss the following and many other related issues:

• The role of energy diversification for a sustainable energy society
• The role of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in promoting sustainable energy
• Asia-Europe co-operation for energy sustainability

The Roundtable is hosted in association with the Asia Europe Foundation ASEF and 5 Partner organisations namely the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the Swedish Environmental Secretariat for Asia(SIDA), the Institute for Global Environmental Studies(IGES), the Korean Environment Institute(KEI) and the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP).
