An Analysis of ASEM 2008

About the Speech:

On Friday, December 5, 2008, Mr. Geoffrey Barrett, Advisor on multilateral relations with Asia in the European Commission, will visit the IIEA to brief members of the China Group on the outcomes of the recent 7th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), which took place in Beijing in October 2008.

ASEM is an informal process of dialogue and co-operation that brings together the 27 EU Member States and the European Commission with 16 Asian countries and the ASEAN Secretariat. ASEM activities are grouped into three main "pillars": political, economic, and social/cultural.

Leaders held discussions on important international and regional issues of common concern and interest under the theme of “Vision and Action: Towards a Win-Win Solution.” A commitment to a multilateral approach to addressing terrorism, international disputes, the global financial crisis and sustainable development, among other things, was emphasized.
