About the Speaker:

Andris Piebalgs is the European Commissioner for Development. Prior to his current appointment he served from 2004 to 2009 as European Commissioner for Energy. In that capacity, he played a central role in the development of a more competitive, sustainable and secure European energy system.  In recognition of his leadership in European energy policy, the Economist magazine honoured him with the title "Eurocrat of the Year" in 2007. In 2009, Andris Piebalgs received the "Diamond Prize" from the Regional Chamber of Commerce in Katowice (Poland) for his work in developing a cohesive European Energy Policy for future generations.  In 2009, the Energy Efficiency Global Forum presented him with the Energy Efficiency Visionary Awards for his "outstanding contributions to the advancement of energy efficiency".

About the Speech:

In his speech, the Commissioner will cover issues such as the role that the Africa-EU renewable energy cooperation programme will play in enhancing energy security for Africa and Europe.

Commissioner Piebalgs’ presentation will provide a unique outlook on the significance of developing a coherent energy policy, which supports development and promotes competitiveness, sustainability and security of energy supply.   This address will form part of the ESB’s ‘Energy Ireland Series 2011’.
