About the Event:

At this event, David Kennedy discussed the lessons for Ireland from the UK’s Climate Change Act 2008 and the statutory role of the Committee on Climate Change in advising the UK Government, which has recently committed to the most ambitious post-2020 carbon reduction targets of any developed country on the advice of the Committee.

Martyn Williams, Senior Parliamentary Campaigner with Friends of the Earth UK, responded to Mr Kennedy.

This roundtable took place in the context of discussions on the design of a Climate Change Bill for Ireland, which the Government has committed to enacting.

About the Speaker:

Before taking up his current position, David Kennedy worked on energy strategy at the World Bank, and the design of infrastructure investment projects at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He has a PhD in economics from the London School of Economics.

Martyn Williams heads the Parliamentary Team at Friends of the Earth England Wales and Northern Ireland.  In 2005 he drafted the first proposal for a Climate Change Bill that would set regular legally-binding targets for cutting emissions reaching forward to 2050.  Over the next 4 years, he led Friends of the Earth’s campaign for such a Bill in Parliament, which culminated in the passing of the UK’s Climate Change Act.
